SEYMOUR T. RHODE'S IMPRESSION OF INDIANA IN l870 "In l870 when I visited Indiana, there were a few odd tracts of the very magnificent timber left standing." Ellis goes on to say that Uncle Seymour had about 20 acres that there had never been an axe in. There were mammoth oaks many of them about 60 feet or more to the nearest limb. Taken from a letter written in l943 by Seymour C. Rhode (Joseph, Jonathan, John) to his nephew Ellis G. Rhode

As we are tracing the Rhode family's journey from North Carolina to Ohio and ultimately to Indiana, it would be well for us to look at the history of Indiana at about that time.
