Charles Seymour Rhode and Nettie Sylvia Reed
In l893 when Jonathan died, he left the farm to his children. My grandfather
Charles at the age of 21 got the house and out buildings and some land.
The sisters also inherited some land. Charles bought some of them out. Aunt
Sadie Messener built a house on her land about 1 mile from the original house.
Charles brought my grandmother, Nettie Sylvia Reed, there as a bride in 1897. Dorothy Gray Rhode lived until 1900 so she was still alive when they married, but I never heard my grandmother mention her. I assume that she lived there on the farm with them, but I am not certain of that. This is Charles and Nettie's wedding photo. Grandma did not like it. She said it made her look like a sick calf. They raised three children there. (Dorothy, Forest and Albert) In l898 when my mother was born, Nettie and Charlie named her, Dorothy, after Dorothy Gray so they must have had a fairly good relationship or maybe it was just tradition as I noted that Jonathan and Dorothy Gray's first child, Arvilla Rebecca was also named for his mother, Rebecca Hurley.
