Dorothy was a natural mother to the four of her children. Her Motto was, "Three balanced meals a day, plenty of fresh air and exercise and a laxative every Saturday night."
She didn't indulge us, but she was loving and understanding.
These were dark times for the country. My Father was a salesman and he was often late getting home, but there was always a plate of food left for him to eat.
He never complained if it was cold. He loved Dorothy's cooking. He always told us that she had baked him the first birthday cake he ever had.
There was no money for picture books. But she had a big thick book called "The Anthology of Children's Literature." There were no pictures, but every night before bed,
Dorothy would sit in a straight backed chair and we would all gather around her in our pajamas on the floor eager to hear the wonderful things she would read to us.
We met Robert Louis Stevenson and loved his Child's Garden of Verses, we met Uncle Wiggley ,Sleeping Beauty, The Three Little Pigs, and Jack Sprat.
We learned about Bobby Coon and his forest friends, Aesop and his fables and many more literary characters.
