Forest Rhode, second child of Charlie and Nettie Rhode was born in 1899. and he died in l969.
He went to elementary school in the old Runner one-room school house in Benton County Indiana
where he met Mable Floy Lindsey (1899-1986) whom he later married.
Forest did not like school and his sister, Dorothy said that her mother took him out at about 4th or 5th grade. He never really learned to read in school, but his daughter, Beverly, said that she taught him to read as an adult as they would read the comics together. Beverly said that in order to pass his driver's test he had to memorize the entire test booklet. As a teen he continued to be a part of his brother, Beanie's, gang at Oxford high school and he also knew, Ralph Simmons, who later married his sister, Dorothy. One morning he came downstairs all dressed up and Grandma Nettie asked him where he was going. He said, "Oh, I am getting married today." She almost fainted. This was the first she had known of his plans. She realized that this was her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Forest continued to farm with his father and he and Peggy, as she was called, lived in Aunt Sadie Messener's old house just a mile up the road from the Rhode farm house. He worked the 3 to 11 shift at the Brown Rubber Company in Lafayette during the World War II years. Many times he was asked to be a foreman in that factory, but he always declined as he did not want to try the paper work that would be involved. Forest and Peggy had five children, Richard (l923-1926), Robert (l923-1923), Beverly Sue(1927- ), Frances Carolyn (l929-l929) and Forest Lindsey ( 1935-l999). | ||||||
