Rhoda Lou Watson (Simmons)
During the worst of those depression years, Ralph had a job selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door. About l932, the vacuum cleaner company decided to go out of business, but they kept my Dad on to close their offices and fire the men that had been working for them. I was in first grade, having to go to a new school every few months as he moved on to another Ohio town. During those time, we lived in furnished houses. Some were lovely, and I remember one house where the owners lived in one upstairs bedroom and we had the rest of the house. They used the rent money we paid them to keep from being foreclosed upon and losing the house. This was a difficult time for me and my mother was worried about me having to attend so many different schools. She asked Grandma Nettie if I could live with them on the farm for the rest of the school year and attend school In Oxford, which I did.
