Seymour Rhode and Rebecca Hurley
We had a nice daytime ride from St. Louis to Windsor through deep cut tunnels along the banks of the old Missouri river. Plenty of the finest peaches at the rate of 4 or 5 cents.

The corn crop is about as good here as we have it at home or perhaps a little better.

Tell Dave that I will write to him as soon as I have time to look around a little.

Expenses were $38.60. The rest was but a trifle as we had to pay neither tavern bill nor stage fare.

The county so far is just such a place as I expected to see. I could not tell you anything new about it. The water is not very good.

Write soon an don't forget.

From your children
Charles W. and Emily E. Gray

Grandma Nettie Rhode kept these letters and brought them out for family members to read from time to time. I remember seeing them when I was a little girl. She gave them to my mother. Dorothy Rhode Simmons. and she gave them to me.
