Dorothy was born the only daughter of Nettie and Charlie Rhode on January 18, l898.
She was a charmer and as the only daughter was somewhat indulged. She was a good student and loved books.
With no radio, TV or Internet at that time, she found reading to be a great pastime.
She had all of Louisa Mae Alcott's books and many others as well. Grandma Nettie kept all of mother's
books which I read during the summers that I spent at the farm.
My mother subscribed to The national Geographic Magazine in the l920's, and Grandma saved those as well as
copies of other old magazines which were stored at the back of the closet in the front upstairs bedroom.
We cut those old National Geographic Magazines up and used them for school reports for years.
The photos were mostly black and white but they were great.
Dorothy went to what was called "Normal School for Teachers." in Terre Haute, Indiana during the summers and then she taught
at a couple of small schools in the county. She talked about teaching in a school where her cousin, Blanch Edwards was principal
and she was a teacher. She told about the fact that they had to room with the family of one of the prosperous farmers near by and walk to school.
She later taught 4th grade for a number of years at the old consolidated School in Oxford (1-12). I later did my student teaching there when I was in Purdue University in 1948.
It is now closed, but she met my father there and they were married in l925.
